Hyundai i30: The story of one "twisted speedometer" by more than 120,000 km

Hyundai i30: The story of one "miraculous rejuvenation of more than 120,000 km" Automato

When our customer from Slovakia asked us to inspect her 2014 Hyundai i30, which had “only” 166,976 km on the odometer, we suspected that we were in for an interesting adventure. And we weren’t far from the truth. What we discovered could serve as a good lesson for anyone who is about to buy a used vehicle. Hyundai i30 twisted speedometer, how did we figure it out?

First clue: Electronic service book

When we started checking the history of this 2014 Hyundai i30 online, we expected the usual discrepancies that often accompany used vehicles. However, what we discovered exceeded our expectations. The last service record from 2021 showed that the car had covered an incredible 239,500 km. There was also another odometer record with an even higher 245,000 km. This was the first and at the same time a big warning. We already knew that the Hyundai i30 had a twisted odometer.

Second clue: Hyundai i30 twisted speedometer on MOT and insured event

With a magnifying glass in hand and a Sherlock Holmes hat on our heads, we set out to do some more spying. MOT checks and insurance records showed us more pieces of the puzzle. Not only had our inspected car been involved in an insurance claim with over 200,000 km on the odometer, but the MOT records painted a clear picture of our Hyundai’s “return to youth”.

Inspection des Autos vor dem Kauf
  • 04/2020 MOT 220,000 km
  • 03/2021 service 235,500 km
  • 05/2021 insured event 239,000Km
  • 06/2021 service 239,500 km
  • 08/2021 Tachometer recording 245,000 km
  • 2 years of uncharted history (expected mileage approx. 50,000 km)
  • 08/2023 insured event 163,500 km
  • 17/2024 MOT 165,400 km
  • 02/2022 advertised for sale 166,976 km

What does this mean?

This case is a classic example of why it is important to conduct a thorough inspection before buying a used vehicle. A twisted speedometer is not just a number; it can hide wear and potential problems that do not correspond to the stated condition and age of the car. And also do not forget that a car with 169,000 km mileage is worth much more than the same one with 280,000. The price difference in this case is almost 30% of the car's price. And who among you wants to pay 30% more for the same car?
